Growing Your Contact List

One of the most common things I hear from people is….”I don’t know anyone so I can’t be successful in direct sales.” I understand this frustration and I’m here to tell you, you CAN be successful!!! I’ve worked in direct sales for over 4 years and have replaced my husbands income along with paying off our GMC Acadia, putting up the down payment on our house, buying the appliance for our new house, buying a playground for our kids, fencing in our acre of land, buying 2 German Shepherd puppies (not my brightest idea!!!) and many other things. And you want to know a secret? Not a single one of my family members has ever helped me out….and I have a LARGE family. In fact, 98% of my family have no clue what I do, nor care haha. Point is, YOU define your success, not who you know!

The Lowdown On Sunscreen

Sunscreen….something we are all told to use so most of us do without a second thought! Last year though, I began researching ways of moving more of my products to non-toxic. I had already started making my own cleaners (which is another story all together as they stank to high heaven HAHA!) and switched the makeup I was using! But when it came to sunscreen, I never knew how dangerous some of them are!

  • 75% Of Sunscreens are toxic
  • More Than 2 million American are diagnosed with skin cancer every year.
  • Multiple studies show a HIGHER risk of malignant melanoma among people who used the most sunscreen.
  • Over 40% of sunscreens contribute to skin cancer
  • Retinyl palmiatate, an ingredient used in many sunscreens is proven to speed up the growth of cancer cells by 21%

I actually saw an article online about the dangers, so I began looking for a non toxic sunscreen. I decided to research for a new one…..but it was hard! And the more research I did on these well-known brands of sunscreen, the more scared I got as so many other Moms are not aware of the dangerous chemicals INSIDE the sunscreen. So here are some of my findings and of course the links to back the research so everyone can read and learn for themselves!

First off, According to the American Cancer Society, babies under the age of six months should have no direct sun exposure, and should NOT use sunscreen of any type! Keep them in the shade, in a stroller, or covered with light weight clothing.

Second thing to know, only 8% of sunscreens are safe for your skin! Why are so many sunscreens dangerous? According to research from the Environmental Working Group “Our review…shows that some sunscreen ingredients absorb into the blood, and some have toxic effects. Some release skin-damaging free radicals in sunlight, some act like estrogen and disrupt hormones, and several can cause allergic reactions and skin irritation. The FDA has not established rigorous safety standards for sunscreen ingredient”

In fact, sunscreens haven’t been regulated since 1978 in the USA!!! YIKES!!!!

Some of the most dangerous chemicals in many sunscreens are oxybenzone, methoxycinnamate, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and octinoxate and PABA. These are estrogenic chemicals and they are directly linked to cancer.

Third thing to think about, the sun is your friend!! It’s the best way to get Vitamin D3 which we all need!! It helps boost your mood, strengthen your immune system, and helps prevent cancer But like many things, it’s good in moderation. 20 minutes of sunshine is great, but too much more can be a bad thing! After that point you need to be in the shade, wear a hat or cool clothing, or apply sunscreen!

Fourth thing to know, there are two types of sunscreen, mineral sunscreen and chemical sunscreen. The chemical sunscreens ingredients are able to penetrate the skin and so your body begins absorbing those ingredients!

sunscrenn is toxic

Mineral sunscreens on the other hand, have ingredients that create a physical barrier between the skin and the sun to ensure protection. They also are not absorbed into your body, do a more effecting job at blocking the UVA rays, AND do not break down in sunlight!

Before you rub that sunscreen all over yourself and your babies, check the ingredients! Mineral sunscreens are easy to find and are becoming more popular at your Health Food Stores. Or limit your sun exposure and use hats and light clothes instead. Don’t take the risk, just switch to toxin free!!!

If you are looking for a great non toxic sunscreen and other amazing products, make sure to check out where I grocery shop! All non toxic, all online, all great ways to save money!

The Power Of Words

As a personal trainer, my goal has been to help people love their bodies no matter where they are at on the journey. But as someone who has lost 80lbs, I also know the mental battle you go through. Because of that, I remind myself to always be careful with what I say and they way I act. Weight loss is HARD! It takes time and sometimes when you meet a person, they make look out of shape but in fact have lost a ton of weight!

After having my youngest son 2 years ago, I struggled to lose the baby weight! I had health issues before he was born, plus spent half my pregnancy too sick to workout, so I just assumed my struggle was due to that. I thought I wasn’t balancing eating healthy, working out and nursing. I tried not to beat myself up and focus on the good….like the fact I was lifting heavier weights than ever before! Slowly I lost all the baby weight, but still had a good 10 lbs to go to pre pregnancy weight. Then I got sick AGAIN and found out I actually had an autoimmune disease that made weight loss extremely hard! I felt justified in that my hard work wasn’t paying off for a good reason!!!

The past two months, we have been working to find a good thyroid medicine and the first was a huge miss. The new one I started last week after discovering I had gained 10lbs from the previous medicine. Normally that would upset me, but I knew why and I knew I was doing everything I can. Instead of focusing on the scale right now, I’m more focused on my health!!!

It’s still a VERY sensitive subject for me and a lot of time I don’t tell people I’m a personal trainer when I meet them as I feel a bit fluffy and I can’t stand the “body scan” people give you.  The other day, I was leaving the park when I encountered a fit lady carrying a kettlebell. Before getting a chance to say ANYTHING, she launched into “I’m a trainer, I do classes here, you should sign up, etc etc etc”….I could hardly get a word in with her trying to sell me on her classes, which sounded GREAT but relationship building is key, not sales! I finally got a work in to say I was a trainer too and have been for years and love it. Her reply….sometimes trainers fall off track and need help from others to get back in shape….ouch!!!!

eb82e7cd-d00c-4948-a514-e76d6fa434f3Words hurt people. They do. Even when we mean well, and I know she did, you have to be careful. You never know what someone is going through. I’ve lost 80lbs, I have 3 kids under the age of 6, my husband is never home, and I battle an invisible disease. I’m AWESOME and proud of all I’m able to do!!! But that conversation had me doubting myself. It made me self conscious and upset again that I can’t get my body to cooperate.  I reminded myself over and over I’m doing what I can and I just have to be patient, but the words still hurt.

Remember to never ever ever ever EVER judge anyone. You never know what someone has been through, or what they are going through right now!! Many people fight battles we can’t see, and one kind word can make a huge difference! Always focus on the good, you could make someones whole day!

 Toxins To Kick Out

Every time you turn on the news, you hear more about the toxins in our homes and the dangers they cause. Some people chose to ignore it as they find its overwhelming. I’ve heard more than one person say “We are all going to die anyway so who cares”, and that’s totally up to you.!!! BUT….myself, as a Mom, I feel its my job to protect my kids. As parents, we do the best we can with the knowledge we have, but when we know better, we need to do better!! I personally know the dangers toxins can have on your health first hand, and for that reason I try and educate other people to HELP prevent them from having any health issues.

Life With An Autoimmune Disease

Recently I shared about being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, and I got so many great emails and messages from others suffering. But I also learned that many people do not know what an autoimmune disease is…or how horrible it can make your life! I was the same way for many years. I knew I didn’t feel well, but thanks to a few doctors, I thought it was all in my head haha. But last fall, after suffering from fevers, stomach pain, exhaustion, and nausea for 6 weeks straight, the words “autoimmune disease” started getting thrown about.

I’m a googler (not sure if that is a word…but we will pretend!) so when those words were uttered, I began to research! I’m going to share a little about these horrible disease for anyone who is not familiar with with. If you have a friend or family member that is suffering, my best advice is to LEARN! Learning what they are going through allows you to better offer help. Nothing is worse than when people try and tell you to take something, or go to a doctor, or rest. Yes they mean well, but with autoimmune disease, we are different! So if you care about someone that is suffering, take a few minutes out of your day and research their condition. It will mean the world to them to know you took the time to try and understand what they might be going through.

The number one thing to know about autoimmune disease….there is NO cure and NO medicine. According to….

“An autoimmune disease develops when your immune system, which defends your body against disease, decides your healthy cells are foreign. As a result, your immune system attacks healthy cells. Depending on the type, an autoimmune disease can affect one or many different types of body tissue. It can also cause abnormal organ growth and changes in organ function.”

Treatment focuses on relieving the symptoms, but there is no way to stop them from happening. People with these conditions often suffer from periods where they feel ok, to what they call “flare ups” which is when they feel very bad and their symptoms and condition may worsen. Many people with autoimmune disease strive to find ways to prevent flare ups because once they are in one, it can take months to heal and recover! Flare ups can be caused by different things such as stress, a food allergy, not enough sleep, too much activity, a small cold, or something in your environment. For most suffering, a flare up is something they want to avoid at ALLLLLLLL costs as it is miserable!

There are over 150 symptoms that can go with autoimmune disease and they are no fun! They range from hair falling out to recurring fevers to body pains to extreme exhaustion and depression. Each different autoimmune disease has its own plentiful amount of symptoms. And they are miserable (I know i’ve repeated this a few times haha, because its true!).

There are over 80 different types of autoimmune disease. Some are easy to detect, others take years! 75% of the people with autoimmune disease are women and many are believed to be hereditary, but not all. And none of these conditions have a cure. They are something people are stuck dealing with the rest of their lives.

“Autoimmune diseases are chronic conditions with no cure. Treatment involves attempts to control the process of the disease and to decrease the symptoms, especially during flare-ups.”

Kinda depressing right?!?! It is!!! Especially if you are in the middle of a flare up, which I have been for 2 weeks now. It makes everything harder, especially when you have no clue what caused it. But the good news is, you can do things to “hopefully” prevent flare ups! Eating a paleo diet is one of the best things you can do along with getting enough exercise. Making sure you take vitamins (and a GOOD type) is very important too! Decreasing stress as much as possible and getting plenty of rest can help too. And above all, avoid anything that might trigger a flare up!

Remember to be an advocate for your health! If something is stressing you out, ask for help!! If you are tried and need to rest, say so! If you have too much on your plate, cut things out! Your health is important, and you have to fight for yourself. And ASK those close to you to learn about your condition and what you are going through. It’s hard for them to understand, but if they take the time to learn, it can help!!!!
