Do And Do NOT Of Social Media

Many people are using Facebook to run their businesses these days, and there is a right and wrong way to do it! I’ll share a few things you want to do….and a few things you want to avoid. Facebook is a great tool, when used correctly!

  1. Professional Profile Picture- Your picture is the first thing people see, you want it to be you, be real, and look as professional as possible. If you can’t afford head shots, get a friend to take some photos of you. Try to do it outside as the lighting is best. Focus on just your face, with no distractions. Its ok to wear a shirt or hat with your company name on it, but you want the picture to be you!
    1. Do NOT make your profile picture the product you promote, an unflattering picture, or quotes. People want to get to know you, and on social media, the first impression is important!
  2. Drama Free Is The Way To Be- Yes we all have problems and issues and drama, but social media is NOT the place to talk about it. Especially if you use that for your business. Many times you are networking and meeting new people, and they don’t want to know about your drama. That’s quick way for them to decide you are not the person to do business with. If you have drama, keep it quiet with close friends, not in public!
  3. Keep Your Page About You- People do not want to see you selling a product 24/7….even if it’s the best product in the world! You need to balance! I recommend 90% of your posts be about you, and only 10% about your business.
  4. Use Your Name- You want people to come to you for help with their needs so it’s important to brand yourself, and not just promote a product. Because of this, do not put your company name in your Profile Name, or use a fake name. It confuses people and makes it hard for them to find you. Be real, be you, and remember you and your product are not the same person.
  5. Keep It Fun- People Need to be engaging with you in order to keep seeing your posts. Share fun activities with your friends, share crafts you are doing, or share motivational quotes. The more people engage with you, the more they will see your posts!
  6. Avoid Selling- Facebook is for keeping in touch with people, not making millions. If you want to share a product you love, that’s great!!! But don’t use it to spam people asking them to buy from you, or posting asking people to buy stuff. The key is to share, not sell.
  7. Get To Know People- If you meet a new friend online, do NOT try to sell them your products. Instead, ask them what they do, what their hobbies are, what they enjoy….get to know them! If you immediately ask them to buy from you, they will most likely un-friend you and that door is slammed shut. But if you get to know them, and later down the road find they aren’t interested, they may refer friends to you! I personally send tons of friends to other business owners! I know my job isn’t for everyone, and that’s ok so I find out their interested, and send them to a job that might be a good fit.
  8. Do not OVER post! Balance how many times you post a day based on how many friends you have. If you have less than 300 friends on social media, only post once a day. If you have around 1,000 you could post about 3 times a day. The reason is, too many posts makes facebook think you are spamming people and they will stop showing their posts to them. Plus, no one wants to see 10 posts from you in one day, even if they really really like you 😉
  9. Don’t share articles, photos, videos etc if you are using your page for you business. Keep it professional. Those funny quotes are cute, but too many of them annoy people and confuse them as to what the purpose is. Make sure people know your page is about you, your family, and your business.
  10. Final Tip- Support Those Who Support You- This is HUGE in home based businesses!!! I remember those who supported me when I first got started, and you will see that those are the people I share the most on this page and on my Facebook Page. They supported me, so I will do everything I can to help them! Those who constantly ask me to buy products or promote their business yet have NEVER done anything to support me….usually do not get my help. I know that’s harsh, but it’s the truth in this business. All it takes is sharing someone’s post about their business, taking a moment to learn more about them, and even refer friends if the products aren’t for you. Showing support can make the difference between someone being successful, and someone feeling alone and giving up. So remember, always always always help those that you can and especially those who have helped you!
